CA09 - Grounding tank trucks

using a truck ground monitoring / interlock system

Owing to the high electro-static ignition risk associated with an ungrounded tank truck, many sites opt to follow the Cenelec Code of practice recommendations and provide interlocked ground monitoring systems to prevent product transfer if the grounding cable is not connected.

A system that both checks the quality of its ground connection at the same time as recognising that the earthing clamp is correctly attached to a road tanker will automatically ensure the system is operating safely as well as preventing dangerous misuse. Such a system will ensure that the following procedure is followed:

Grounding tank truck using a interlock system

CLC/TR 50404 states that:  A grounding cable should be connected to the truck before any operation (eg. opening man lids, connecting pipes) is carried out.  It is recommended that interlocks should be provided to prevent loading when the grounding cable is not connected (5.4.4.1.2).
